Dakota Tipi First Nation is a band situated about 2.5 miles southwest of the city of Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, roughly 80 km west of Winnipeg, on the Yellow Quill Trail. The band was formed in 1972 when the Sioux Village settlement near Portage La Prairie divided into two, therefore, creating Dakota Tipi First Nation and Dakota Plains First Nation.
The people are Dakota and originally spoke the Sioux native language. However, today most people speak English as the language of preference. Its registered population as of May 2021 is 444, with 268 living on their own reserve.
