About
Big Island Lake Cree Nation is a Cree First Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. The band has reserved for itself one reserve, also called Big Island Lake Cree Nation, within Rural Municipality of Beaver River No. 622. The band was originally known as Joseph Bighead, the chief at the time of the reserve's creation in 1914. Bighead's surname was a translation of mahkistikwân 'big head'. In 2000, the chief and council decided to reinstate the traditional name of the band, which relates to Lac des Iles. The band is one of the few in Saskatchewan to remain outside any tribal council, believing membership serves to diminish treaty rights.
