Native Village of Kotzebue

About

The Native Village of Kotzebue lies on a 3-mile-long spit ranging in width from 1,100 to 3,600 feet located on the Baldwin Peninsula near the discharges of the Kobuk and Noatak Rivers. The site of Kotzebue has been occupied by Iñupiat Eskimos for at least 9000 years and is believed to be the oldest settlement in both North and South America.


The population of Kotzebue is 3,135, 75 percent of which is Iñupiat Eskimos among whom subsistence activities are an integral part of the lifestyle.
