Paq'tnkek First Nation

About

Paq'tnkek First Nation is a Mi'kmaq band in northeastern Nova Scotia. The band was established on March 3, 1820 in Antigonish County and is located 24km east of Antigonish, Nova Scotia. The name Paqtnkek means “by the bay” and emphasizes the importance of the local bay and its resources to the Mi’kmaw people. The First Nation has three reserves and its populated reserve is Paqtnkek-Niktuek 23. The band is a member of the Confederacy of Mainland Mi'kmaq and the native language of the people is Mi'kmaq. As of August 2021, the Nation had 596 registered members, including 422 residing on their own reserve.
