Peter Chapman First Nation

About

Peter Chapman Band is one of the three bands of the James Smith Cree Nation (JSCN) located in Saskatchewan, Canada. The Peter Chapman and James Smith Bands were amalgamated as the James Smith Band in 1902, and the boundaries of James Smith Reserve were adjusted to accommodate the increased band membership.

In 2000, the combined membership of the JSCN, totalling 2,700, voted to restore and reinstate the three bands of JSCN, namely; the Cumberland 100A First Nation/Peter Chapman Band; the James Smith Cree Nation; and the Chakastaypasin Band of the Cree Nation to their original and intended form. The mandate was to restore the bands to their status prior to the North West Rebellion of 1885 and prior to the 1902 invalid amalgamation between James Smith and Cumberland 100A.

A request to the Commission to conduct an inquiry into the validity of the 1902 surrender has not been completed. The Peter Chapman Band is recognized at some level by governmental offices but has not been re-established as a band independent from James Smith.
