Tlowitsis Tribe

About

The Tlowitsis Nation (formerly the Klowitsis Tribe, the Turnour Island Band, and the Tlowitsis-Mumtagila First Nation) is a band of the Ławit'sis tribe of the Kwakwaka'wakw peoples located in the Queen Charlotte Strait-Johnstone Strait area. The band's offices are in the city of Campbell River on the property of the Homalco First Nation. Kwak̓wala is the people's native language. The Tlowitsis were displaced from Kalagwees in the late 1960s. The band was without a formal community to call home until the spring of 2018 when it finalized the purchase of a 635-acre property in the Strathcona Regional District, just south of Campbell River, where it is establishing a new home community for its citizens. As of August 2021, the Nation had 444 registered members, including five residing on their own reserve.
