Weenusk First Nation

About

Weenusk First Nation is a Cree First Nation band in the Canadian province of Ontario. Its reserves are the Winisk Indian Reserve 90 and the Winisk Indian Settlement. Originally, the Weenusk First Nation was located within its reserve, but it was forced to move 30 km southwest to Peawanuck when spring floods swept away much of the original settlement in 1986. The community, being primarily Swampy Cree, speaks the n-dialect of the Cree language. Cree, Anishininiimowin, and Ojibwemowin are also spoken by the people since the community is composed of Cree, Oji-Cree, Ojibwa, and Métis peoples. In May 2021, its registered population was 605, with 25 people living on their own reserve.
